“As a working mom, I find that vegan smoothies are a great way for our whole family to kick off the day with a filling meal loaded with nutrients. I make a big smoothie batch early in the am – I use a Vitamix – as a meal for myself, my husband, and my toddler. We use frozen organic fruit as a base, but the secret ingredients are avocados and kombucha. The avocado adds a creamy texture and healthy fats and fiber while the kombucha float delivers subtle bubbles, making you sip the smoothie slower. Bonus: the kombucha delivers your daily dose of probiotics.

- 8 oz. Big Easy Bucha Bayou Berry Kombucha

“My favorite vegan smoothie recipe is the Recover Me Smoothie. A hard workout deserves a great recovery smoothie. Your muscles have been working out hard and are in need of some gentle loving and anti-inflammatory action to help make them heal and recover faster.
“The Recover Me smoothie is exactly what you need:
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric and 1/2 inch of ginger to reduce inflammation
- 1 scoop of vegan protein powder for your muscles
- 1 cup of sweet potato for slow acting carbs to help you your cells absorb protein better
- 1 banana and 2 dates for sweetness
- 1 cup of calcium-fortified almond milk to blend it all together
“This tasty and easy recipe is all-natural and full of nutrients. A great recovery is the key to getting the most out of your workout. Now that you did the hard work, sip up and let this smoothie provide the nutritional recovery your body needs.”

“Here is the low sugar, high protein, easy-peasy breakfast shake that I now drink every single morning. I have more energy and before noon, I am already halfway to my protein goal for the day!
“Dr Mark Hyman’s Whole-Food Good Protein Shake Recipe (modified by Michelle)
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries (or fresh); raspberries can work here too
- 1/2 cup frozen cranberries (rhubarb is also low in sugar and available frozen)
- 1/2 organic lemon with rind
- 1 tablespoon raw almond butter or almond meal
- 2 raw walnuts (preferably soaked)
- 2 raw cashews (preferably soaked)
- 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds (preferably soaked overnight)
- 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds (preferably soaked)
- 1 tablespoon organic chia seeds
- 1 tablespoon ground flax seed
- 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
- 1/2 cup fresh Swiss chard, kale, or spinach (you could substitute a scoop of green superfood powder)
- 1/4 cup fresh basil or mint
- 1/4 avocado
- 1 cup filtered water
- 1/2 cup non-dairy yogurt
- 1/2 tablespoon coconut oil (optional)
- 1/2 a banana to make it creamier (optional)
- Dash of turmeric, cinnamon, or other spices (optional)
“Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until smooth and creamy. While not essential, it can help to add the ingredients to the blender in this order: water, nuts and seeds, powders and spices, leaves and herbs, fruits, yogurt, and heavier stuff last (in other words, add by weight from light to heavy). Lastly, add more water if you want it thinner or less if you prefer a thicker shake).”

“Being vegetarian for more than 26 years and a self-taught cook, I tend to prepare and develop my own recipes. Without a doubt, the most refreshing, filling and smooth drink I found was the Moroccan Avocado Almond Smoothie to which I made a small adjustment from the original cow milk version. First, blend a handful of pre-soaked almonds with water, so that we have the plant milk ready. Then, mix half an avocado, one small banana, and two oranges and blend again. For those that want a bit more sweetness to their taste, just drop one or two fresh dates into the mix. If you blend too long, the drink will warm up, so you might want to add a couple of ice cubs in the blender.”

“I love this Green Me Up Scotty shake because it is loaded with iron and omega 3 fatty acids. About 25% of the population is anemic, meaning they lack iron in their blood. It can also be tricky to get iron on a vegan diet because it is found most abundantly in animal products. But fear not, because this shake is here to save the day! Plus the omega 3s will give your skin a perfect glow and help to alleviate
acne.
“Green Me Up Scotty Shake:
- 1 cup almond milk or other non-dairy milk
- 1 cup kale leaves or baby spinach
- 1 large granny smith apple cored and cut into chunks
- 1 tablespoon almond butter or peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds or ground flaxseed
- 2 to 3 ice cubes
“Directions: Pour in liquid ingredients first followed by spinach and apple, then lastly add the seeds and nut butters. Blend until all mixed and smooth. Enjoy!”

“So many smoothies are naturally vegan, so it’s difficult to choose a favorite. One of my all-time favorites is a mixed fruit smoothie:

- 1 tbsp of ground flax seed
- 2 bananas
- 3 dark sweet cherries (frozen)
- 1 cup of frozen fruit (mango, mixed berries, it’s up to you!)

- Add 1 tsp of honey or applesauce (optional)
“Blend all the ingredients until mixed well.”

“My favorite vegan smoothie is the Peanut Butter Acai Smoothie. It’s simple, but hands down the best vegan acai smoothie you can make at home.
- 4 oz. – 8 oz. unsweetened non dairy milk (I prefer almond)
- 1 packet acai puree (I prefer Trader Joe’s brand!)
- 10-20 strawberries
- 1 banana (medium sized)
- 1-2 tablespoons of unsalted/no sugar added creamy peanut butter (you can sub cashew or other nut butters if you prefer)
“Run the acai packet under hot water for a few moments and break it up (while still in the packet). Snip and empty into the blender.
“Add all other ingredients. Blend. Stop, scrape the sides, and blend until smooth. Pour into glass or bowl and top with 1-2 tablespoons of cacao nibs.
“The less milk you use, the thicker smoothie you get can also be eaten in a bowl. Tip: Peel and freeze the banana over night for a more ice cream-like consistency – feels like dessert for breakfast.”

“My favorite vegan smoothie came about when I was trying to lose weight many, many years ago.
“A minor celebrity brought out a fitness DVD and the smoothie recipe was featured in the DVD. I loved it because it didn’t feel fruit heavy and featured pineapple, spinach, cucumber, celery, and avocado, as well as a few other healthy ingredients, too. It helped me lose more than 50 pounds. I love it for a detox whenever I feel like my body is sluggish, usually after a holiday or post Christmas. Here is a link to the recipe.”
